Author and doll historian Karen B. Kurtz released her children’s book “Sophia’s Gift,” illustrated by Loran Chavez, in March. In May, Kurtz and Chavez were informed that they had won a Gold award in the 2021 Human Relations Indie Book Awards in the category Cultural Human Relations, Children’s Books.

An award-winning professional doll artist for about a decade, Marguerite Noschese had been looking forward to a varied roster of shows at the beginning of the year. “Unfortunately, many shows have been cancelled this year,” she said. “I did, however, partake in the Quinlan Virtual Show and Sale that was arranged for the participating artists.

The doll world lost a renowned and beloved artist Oct. 14 with the death of Dianna Effner due to cancer. Effner began designing and making porcelain dolls in the late 1970s, designing for a variety of manufacturers as well as producing and finishing dolls herself.
