A lifelong doll lover and a serious collector since the mid-’90s, Carol Johansen began exploring making her own dolls when, she said, “My taste in dolls outstripped my budget, as it does for many of us.” She took sculpting courses both locally and online from such artists as Diane Keeler and Deb Wood and began making dolls professionally in 2008.

Launching her career as a reborn artist in 2010, Susan Gibbs switched to silicone babies in 2014 and has become a highly regarded teacher as well as an award-winning creator. Though the global pandemic put a halt to her in-person workshops and classes, she was able to continue her online courses in silicone painting. This year she added something new: a contest open to her online students from 2020 through 2022.

When Jennie Sykes relocated her family and business, Porcelain Classics, to Hastings, Michigan, about five years ago, the building she purchased had more space than her 28-year-old porcelain dollmaking and repair business needed. She wanted to expand her current business while also showcasing her love for antiques and vintage items, but the name “Porcelain Classics” didn’t fit the new retail space. Thus, Bee Eclectic Studio and Emporium was born.

While multi-award-winning artist Pat Moulton originally built her reputation mainly as a maker of baby dolls and a pioneer in making reborn kits, she’s proven to be an innovator in the BJD field as well, creating socket-and-ball-joint tools in a variety of sizes to help BJD sculptors create joints that will fit perfectly.

A lifelong doll collector, Mary Senko was inspired to start a business as a show promoter while working on a virtual Facebook event: the World Doll Day Celebration planned and led by Michael Canadas and David Robinson, the directors of the Grovian Doll Museum in Pacific Grove, California.

Award-winning doll artist Sandra Maxwell started making her dolls professionally in the early 2000s. While she’s created dolls in polymer clay, porcelain, and other mediums, she’s probably best-known for her Punkin line of 7-inch resin ball-jointed dolls (BJDs). In 2020, she was an Industry’s Choice winner in the Dolls Awards of Excellence for her Punkin Pie entry.
