For the first time, Mattel asked girls around the world to choose Barbie’s next career. Polls closed Feb. 10, and more than a half million votes were counted, deciding Barbie’s 125 career as “News Anchor.” The doll will make her debut this fall in a pink suit with black accents, a news folder, a camera and a microphone.
Additionally, in response to the popular vote requesting the “Computer Engineer,” Mattel is producing that doll as well. “All the girls who imagine their futures through Barbie will learn that engineers—like girls—are free to explore infinite possibilities limited only by their imagination,” says Nora Lin, president of Society of Women Engineers.
Computer Engineer is “geek chic” in a binary code patterned tee and comes equipped with all the latest gadgets, including a smartphone, Bluetooth headset and laptop travel bag.
