Nice article Stephanie. I don't think anyone here in New York doesn't remember exactly where they were when the planes hit the towers. Those were life defining moments. As a native New Yorker and the mother of a first responder I can tell you, every year 9/11 brings a flood of emotions for me. First and foremost, relief - my son lost two co-workers, but by a stroke of luck and 15 minutes worth of good timing,he was safe that morning. Some are lingering feelings of anger for friends and relatives senselessly murdered that day; and some are fear (my first responder was there once again for the ten year anniversary doing a double shift that started at 2:00 AM.) But mostly, it is sadness for all of the things we lost that day, not the least of which was our sense of security. However, I have to say that one result that was gratifying to this Big Apple native was the unbelievable kindnesss shown to my son and his fellow officers in the aftermath. Precinct neighbors bought home cooked meals to the officers because they knew that no one was getting home for weeks after the attacks...they were sleeping on the floor of the precinct when they could catch a nap. Restaurants flung open their doors and fed the police, firemen and construction workers for free. People dropped off new, packaged changes of underclothes, bottled water, toothpaste, toothbrushes, etc. Yes, we lost a lot on 9/11, but we gained this incredible sense that in the end, hustle and bustle aside, New Yorkers are at heart kind, sharing, generous people...and when something terrible happens, they rise to the occasion. God Bless New York! - Jane Malin

I haven't spent a whole day reflecting on 9/11 since it happened a decade ago. I put those feelings on a backburner in my life. The ceremonies made it all real to me again today. It brought all those feelings back to my mind again. Thank for you for this story, and I hope your friend's family was okay on that day. I have to pray that the loved ones are looking down from up high and are protecting us now. God bless. - Joanne

I didn't know anyone who perished on that day, but I had friends who died during the Oklahoma City bombing. Terrorism is a cowardly misguided way to promote an agenda. It is a horrible way to kill and to spread fear. I hope evil does not come to our country again. Be safe this week. - Charlene

Thank you for sharing, Stephanie. I was living in Delaware at the time, in one of the flight patterns of the Air Force C-5 cargo jets based at Dover AFB. The silence was deafening. DAFB, besides being the east coast base for those monster aircraft, is also home to the largest military mortuary in the US. The first air trafic noise we heard were the choppers coming from the Pentagon.

Like you, I will never forget. - Gabrielle

I traveled to NYC about a month after the attacks, and the people were all still shaken up. I was nervous when I arrived, and feared that another attack could come. I've felt my fears lessen over time, but now they are spiking with the 10th anniversary. God bless America and keep us all safe! I hope this weekend is not an opportunity for my hatred to occur. - Monica
