Entry deadline extended for 2016 DOLLS Awards of Excellence!
Monday, 22 February 2016 21:09

2016 DAE DiamondsThe deadine for entering the 2016 DOLLS Awards of Excellence (DAE) competition has been extended to Tuesday, May 10. The DAEs recognize and encourage excellence in the design and creation of dolls. Photos of all the entries are reviewed by an esteemed panel of judges, who evaluate each submission on overall aesthetic appeal, excellence in concept, design, and execution, and quality of material and workmanship; the highest-scoring creations in each category receive the DAE Industry’s Choice Awards and become the nominees for that year’s Diamond (Public’s Choice) Awards. DOLLS readers then vote for their favorite nominee in each category to determine the Diamond Award winners.

This year, we have completely revamped the categories, including adding several new categories, and changed the entry fee structure. Be sure to read the Complete DAE Rules before purchasing your entries. Once you have read the rules and decided which categories you wish to enter, go to the Official Entry Page to purchase your entries.

There are two sets of entry fees this year: one for the Standard Categories of the competition and one for the Special Categories (see 2016 DAE Categories, below). For entries in the standard categories, the first entry is $79, and additional entries are $49 each. For the special categories, the first entry is $39 and additional entries are $19 each. Payment must be made by credit card or a PayPal account. These fees are nonrefundable. Fees are applied to the contest’s administrative and publicity costs. Each entry must be accompanied by a paid entry fee or it will be disqualified.

Once payment is received, you’ll receive an email with the link to the online entry form. Fill out the form completely and upload two photos of the entry (see full contest rules).

  1. Definitions of terms and categories

For the purposes of this contest, the following definitions apply:

Dolls are jointed or unjointed playthings or collectibles, produced from any materials, in a human image.

Standard Categories: Dolls entered in categories 1 through 15 must be designed by the submitting artist or manufacturer from original sculpt to finished doll. Collaborations are permitted, provided contributing artists are acknowledged, but dolls made from kits or altered versions of an existing doll must be entered in the appropriate Special Category.

Special Categories: Dolls entered in categories 16 and 17 can be made from kits or altered versions of an existing doll. In both cases, the original designer and doll or kit must be named in the Special Features portion of the entry form. Dolls pictured in photos submitted in the remaining Special Categories should likewise be properly credited.

BJD: While many types of dolls have ball joints, the BJD category specifically refers to ball-jointed dolls designed to allow customization of the doll itself — for instance, so that a collector can easily replace the eyes or wig.

Artist: An artist is defined as someone who makes fewer than 1,000 dolls annually. Submissions in the artist categories must be designed by the submitting artist and at least 50% of each doll, including the head, must be constructed by the artist. Collaborations are allowed, but all contributing artists must be acknowledged.

Editions: Open, Limited, One of a Kind (OOAK): Category 1 (Children’s Play Doll) requires open editions. Other open or limited-edition dolls, including any limited-edition sculpt with a unique face-up and/or costume should be entered in the appropriate Collectible or Artist Doll category (categories 2 through 10). Any doll entered in a One-of-a-Kind category (11 through 15) must have an original, unique sculpt.

  1. Eligibility

All entries for the 2016 DAEs must have been first introduced on or after January 1, 2015, and made available for sale during 2015 or 2016, provided they were not entered in past DAE competitions. Dolls introduced and made available for sale in 2015 or 2016 which have already been sold are eligible. Each entry must be a new, original design and not a variation or re-costuming of a previous design. Artists may submit entries which were created as collaborations. All participating artists must be identified, but it is not necessary to detail the contributions of each artist. Entrants may submit as many entries as desired in each category, but each doll can only be entered once. Any substantial changes made in costume, materials, or retail price from the original entry are grounds for disqualification of the entry. For your protection, please do not submit entries in the image of or with the name of trademarked characters unless you hold a license to create the characters.

  1. Entry Requirements

Each entry must be accompanies by a paid fee; a fully completed entry form, and two photographs as detailed in section 4. Entries that are incomplete or missing photographs will be ruled invalid. You must submit a separate entry form and photos for each doll you enter. If a submission entered into a category is deemed inappropriate by the staff of DOLLS, the magazine has the right to disqualify the entry or move it to a different category.

  1. Photographs

Each entry must be accompanied by two clear color photographs (one full body and one close-up of the face or other detail appropriate to the category), sized at least 900 by 1,200 pixels (3 x 4 inches at 300 dots per inch). No prints, disks, transparencies or slides will be accepted. These photographs become the property of Jones Publishing, Inc., and may be used for promotional purposes or in DOLLS. If nominated, your photo will be used in DOLLS. Entries must be photographed against a plain, flat, solid-color background. Each entry must be photographed separately. Only props or accessories sold with the doll are permitted in the photograph.

2013_DAE_Diamonds_logoThe DOLLS Awards of Excellence (DAE), also known as the Diamond Awards, is accepting entries for the 2013 competition through March 7, 2013. The Diamond Awards recognize and encourage excellence in the design and creation of dolls.

Photos of all the entries are reviewed by an esteemed panel of judges, who evaluate each submission on overall aesthetic appeal, excellence in concept, design, and execution, and quality of material and workmanship; the highest-scoring creations in each category receive the DAE Industry’s Choice Awards and become the nominees for that year’s DAE Public’s Choice Awards. DOLLS readers then vote for their favorite nominee in each category to determine the Public’s Choice winners.

To enter the 2013 DOLLS Awards of Excellence competition, first read all the rules online, then go to the Online Contest Entry Page.
