In the News ... Heidi Heideman

heidiheideman3Heidi Ann Heideman is the editor of Fired Arts & Crafts and is a regular contributor to DOLLS magazine and DOLLS Updates. Bitten by the doll-collecting bug at around age 6, Heidi’s first doll collection revolved around "Rainbow Brite." Now in her late 20s, her doll-collecting tastes have developed a bit and revolve around dolls paying homage to classic literary characters, such as renditions of the characters of The Wizard of OZ,  Alice in Wonderland, and, of course, Johanna Spryi’s Heidi.

From the Show Floor ... Dorothy Drake

dorothydrakeAfter 30 years as a general manager in corporate America, I decided to find a less aggressive line of work. In the year 2000, too young to retire, but wanting to do something different, I wondered about playing with dolls professionally. I had been exhibiting at doll and teddy bear shows since the early 1990s and had assumed production responsibilities for a local doll club show. When the Salt Lake doll shows became available, I took the plunge. In 2003 the promoter of the six shows in the Pacific Northwest passed away. His son called me, and I took an even bigger gamble. After that, opportunities allowed for expansion into California; first Roseville, then San Jose and most recently, San Diego. My husband and I now produce 15 Crossroads Doll & Teddy Bear Shows a year.

Dolls in Black, Chronicles and Perspectives ... Debbie Garrett

deb-garrettDebbie Behan Garrett, a black-doll enthusiast, is the author of two full-color black-doll references:  The Definitive Guide to Collecting Black Dolls, Hobby House Press, Inc., 2003; and Black Dolls: A Comprehensive Guide to Celebrating, Collecting, and Experiencing the Passion, a 2008 self-publication. Ms. Garrett cofounded The Black Doll-E-Zine, the first and only e-zine, (now a Yahoo! Group), devoted to collecting black dolls.  She is the founder and moderator of the WeLoveBlackDolls Yahoo! Group.

As a member at-large of the United Federation of Doll Clubs, Ms. Garrett has contributed to its Doll News quarterly publication, is a contributing writer to other doll magazine, as well. As a blogger for DOLLS, Ms. Garrett endeavors to continue documenting the historical and present-day significance of black dolls.

A native Texan and married mother of two adult children, Ms. Garrett is also a doting granny of two precocious boys.  Her non-doll-researching/collecting time is spent working as a home-based, quality-improvement specialist for a leading global provider of clinical documentation.

On the MADC Front ... Pat Burns

patburnsI'm a wife, mother of three adult children, retired teacher and a doll crazy! I've been a doll collector all my life, a member of MADC for more than 30 years and have served as editor of The Review for more than 20 years. I served two terms on the club's board of directors. I've worked with EXPO since it started, have served as UFDC's advertising manager, given many doll-related programs, etc., but most of all, I love dolls.

The Doll Addiction ... Alison Rasmussen

alison-rI’m Alison Rasmussen, a fairly new but die-hard doll collector in San Diego, Calif. I try to stay a sane stay-at-home mother of four active children, ages 9 through 3. My doll addiction keeps me away from illegal substances, though it may drive my poor husband in the opposite direction.

I became a doll collector the first time I laid hands on a Tonner doll and since have discovered Fashion Royalty, Goodreau, Berdine Creedy and have been adding to my growing ball-jointed collection (and my wish list).

Currently, my collection consists of several themes: a history of fashion; re-imagined fairytales; Alice in Wonderland dolls; and a rather morbid collection of Henry VIII’s wives. My top three prize possessions of the moments are "Queen V Veronique" by Integrity, "Gothic Alice" by Goodreau Doll and "Mademoiselle a la Mode Tyler" by Tonner.

In addition to dolls, I’m discovering photography, and I love quilting and (more importantly) collecting fabric. But I try not to let these hobbies interfere significantly with my doll budget.

PsychDollogy ... Lori Lawton

lori-lawtonLori Lawton collected dolls during her childhood in the mid 1960s through "Barbie’s" Mod era. As an adult, she has focused on Barbie Collector, Madame Alexander and Tonner dolls, which dominate her collection. Her aim is to have at least one doll from each manufacturer of fashion dolls. Her other passions are classic films, classy television, travel, art museums, poetry and literature. Although the disorders were undiagnosed as a child, as an adult Lori has had ongoing treatment for depression and recently learned she has attention deficit disorder. The experiences have inspired her to write about the theraupetic benefits to dolls.
