Stacia McDonough Wins Featured Artist Nod

stacia-m--portraitStacia McDonough of Neva Dolls, known for her exquisite Russia-inspired pieces, was recently chosen as the featured artist for the The Doll and Toy Museum of New York. “The Toy Museum is a wonderful institution. It is an honor that they chose me as their featured artist,” says McDonough of the award. “I was born in New York so that just makes it extra special!”

Alexander exhibited an authentic Rockette costume at its booth; it was the inspiration for the new “Candy Cane Bizzazz.”Our favorite doll manufacturers displayed at Toy Fair 2009. Adora, Alexander, Best Pals, Tonner, Charisma Brands, Dolls by Berenguer, Käthe Kruse, KidsGive, Kingstate and Molly P. Originals were all there, but they debuted their 2009 lines at IDEX in Orlando first. Mattel, however, saved everything for New York, treating its vendors to a Barbie on the Runway fashion show!

Kimberly Lasher introduced the new resin BJDs “Anya” and "Ainsley" (pictured). She dons a Marbledhalls frock. Of the show, Lasher stated there were “a lot of collectors, despite the economy.” IDEX Premiere 2009 in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 30-Feb. 1, 2009, restored hope in many dollmakers that 2009 will usher in more economic activity, as orders exceeded expectations.

Wu's Inaugural Gown Coup

jason-wu-low-resTwenty-six-year-old fashion designer Jason Wu, best known in the doll world as the mastermind behind Integrity Toys’ flamboyant, audacious line, Fashion Royalty, made national (and international) headlines when it was announced he designed Michelle Obama’s historically important inauguration gown.

He designed the white silk chiffon, off-the shoulder floor-length gown cascading with Swarovoski crystals with the First Lady in mind. And now, as is custom, the dress will reside in the Smithsonian’s inaugural gown collection.

Middleton Doll Co. Goes Private

After continual losses throughout 2008, the Middleton Doll Co.’s board proposed to make the publically traded company private. The majority of shareholders agreed with the board’s proposal, voting yes, when they  met on Dec. 30,  2008. If they would have voted no to the board’s proposal, the company may have had no other choice than to file for bankruptcy.
