|2010 Tonner Convention a Home Run|
To attend a Tonner Doll Collectorsâ Convention is to experience a thing of beauty, a study in superior coordination and organization, and some of the best entertainment the doll industry has to offer. Throughout the course of four days, myriad gorgeous dolls are unveiled, delightful presentations and seminars given, decadent meals consumed and priceless moments of comradeship had by likeminded collectors.
And every year Tonner Doll Co. does it brilliantly, all the while keeping it fresh, new and different. 2010 was no exception. Key breakout events were themed Marie Antoinette, steam punk, âFireflyâ (the TV series), Revlon and moon-and -stars, among others. Guests dressed up accordingly, getting into the spirit of the themes, while receiving incredible souvenir dolls like the ravishing Firefly-inspired âSihnon,â the cutting-edge steam punk Ellowyne Wilde, âLetting Off Steam,â and the all-new (concept, 13-inch body, sculpt) stunning Revlon doll, âGlamorous Red,â to name just a few.
Saturday evening Robert Tonner surprised and delighted attendees at The Moon Banquet with a runway show, featuring designs from his âreal peopleâ spring and
fall 2010 lines. Before the models took to the runway, Tonner explained why he is more satisfied with his fall collection than his spring collection. âI had all these rules in my head and right away all these rules came flooding back. So I did the first collection for spring with those rules in mind,â he said. âBut when I got better in the second oneâI thought the second collection was infinitely betterâyou know what I did, I used the dolls as inspiration. I used âEllowyneââand youâll see that on the runwayâand âTylerâ and âAntoinette.â
And it showed. As the models strutted the designs, the John Keats words came to mind, âA thing of beauty is a joy for ever: Its loveliness increases; it will never pass into nothingness." As collectors left the
event with their luminescent souvenir doll, âCelestial,â in hand, itâs doubtful that any attendee would have disagreed.
Full convention coverage in print and video formats will be featured in the September 2010 issue of DOLLS. Donât miss it!
